AI's growing role in EfD - research, education and policy engagement

Body

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) within the EfD initiative has increased over the last year. EfD centers and individual researchers have integrated AI into their work, enhancing efficiency in many activities.

EfD researchers have begun exploring AI applications to evaluate experimental designs for policy research. AI is being used for language assistance, particularly for non-native English speakers. Researchers also leverage AI for literature reviews, seeking explanations, and streamlining analytical processes.

EfD Global Hub has developed a prototype AI-powered research tagger designed to analyze EfD discussion papers and other research outputs at scale. This initiative includes structuring EfD’s research database for search and analysis, enabling better evaluation of research management, collaborations, and methodologies.

AI improves education

AI has been integrated into various educational activities across EfD centers. Some applications include:

• A research proposal development course that prepares students for thesis work with AI-enhanced tools.

• A course chatbot (digital study buddy) used to support learning.

• AI tools incorporated into climate simulations and practical exercises.

• Constructing scenarios for evaluating policy instruments.

• Students engage in chatbot debates, case studies, and role-play for exam preparation.

• Simulated stakeholder meetings.

Policy engagement and communication benefit from AI tools

EfD is developing a chatbot based on its forthcoming Policy Engagement Handbook. This interactive tool will provide practical guidance on effective policy communication and engagement strategies.

The EfD communication officers have also had workshops on how to make the best use of AI tools in their work.

Part of the EfD strategy

At the EfD Annual Meeting, one-on-one AI support sessions were conducted for fellows alongside discussions on the co-creation of EfD’s AI strategy.

The organization has also incorporated AI as a strategic area in its 2025-2027 plan and committed to allocating approximately 50% of a full-time position to AI-related support and initiatives starting January 1, 2025.

These developments underscore EfD’s commitment to harnessing AI for research, education, and policy impact, to support sustainable development efforts worldwide, and also addressing the risks of AI.
