Agricultural Adaptation to Climate Change in Africa - Food Security in a Changing Environment

Submitted by Petra Hansson on

Description

A changing climate is likely to have a drastic impact on crop yields in Africa. The purpose of this book is to document the effects of climate change on agriculture in Africa and to discuss strategies for adaptation to hotter weather and less predictable rainfall. These strategies include promoting opportunities for farmers to adopt technologies that produce optimal results in terms of crop yield and income under local agro-ecological and socioeconomic conditions.

Determinants of adoption of Bt cotton among smallholder cotton producers in Kitui and Kisumu counties, Kenya.

Submitted by Jane Nyawira Maina on
EfD Authors:

The Government of Kenya acknowledges the importance of the cotton industry in the country's development agenda, particularly under the manufacturing pillar. To revitalize the industry, the government approved Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) cotton for commercial production in 2019. Bt cotton is promoted on the grounds that it is resistant to pests such as bollworms which can lead to a reduction in the use of pesticides, improve productivity, and in the long run deliver increased profits to farmers.

Determinants of finger millet adoption, non-adoption and dis-adoption among smallholder farmers in Nakuru, Kenya

Submitted by Jane Nyawira Maina on
EfD Authors:

Previous studies on technology adoption have treated smallholder farmers’ decisions as being binary. In this article, we assess the adoption, non-adoption and dis-adoptions decisions among smallholder finger millet producers in Nakuru, Kenya. The crop has potential to enhance food security and nutrition in the context of climate change. Data for the study were collected from a household survey of 326 households selected through a multi-stage sampling process. Descriptive and logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the data.

Welfare effects and gender dimensions of adoption of climate smart agriculture practices: Evidence from Kenyan small-scale farmers

Submitted by Jane Nyawira Maina on
EfD Authors:

Agricultural production in Kenya is predominantly rain-fed and highly vulnerable to climate variability and change. Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) is thus being promoted with the aim of increasing agricultural productivity, adapting to the changing climate, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Despite increased adoption of CSA practices by smallholder farmers, the heterogenous welfare effects are hardly understood as the results have been mixed.

Understanding the role of home gardens in household food supply in times of shocks and uncertainty: evidence from covid-19 lockdown in Nigeria

Submitted by Agha Inya on

Home gardening has continued to gain increased interest among researchers because of its role in promoting household food security and strengthening local agrifood systems, particularly in developing countries like Nigeria. In times of shocks like the COVID-19 pandemic, which severely disrupted food supply chains, it offers significant potential to drive sustainable household food supply. However, its potential to fully support household food supply in Nigeria remains underutilized.
