Highlights in 2007/8

In line with the legal requirement specified in Section 38 of the Environmental Management and Coordination Act (EMCA,1999), the government initiated a process of preparing the National Environmental Action Plans (NEAP) in January 2008. EfD Kenya is actively engaged in this process so as to adopt appropriate and effective plans for environmental protection that will enhance the sustainable utilisation and management of natural resources over the next five years. These plans will be mainstreamed in the national planning and management processes in the country. In December 2007 the government, through the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, embarked on a process to develop an overarching National Environmental Policy. This policy will guide and harmonise other land and natural resource policies to effectively address the needs of our people and the environment. EfD Kenya will pay particular attention to the integration of environmental economics and recommend management tools and instruments to guide the sustainable utilisation and management of our natural resources. In collaboration with African Wildlife Foundation (AWF), the center is working towards the establishment of voluntary conservation easements on private land in Kenya; especially as it relates to providing for wildlife corridors. This is intended to deal with human-wildlife conflicts, protect the environment and to promote sustainable livelihoods. The center has also been instrumental in the preparation of a policy brief for Sida on the Lake Victoria region in Kenya. This has been a useful contribution to the LVEMP II (Lake Victoria Environmental Management Plan) project. The centre undertook an economic and financial analysis, commissioned by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, to guide the process of developing natural resources to enhance environmental sustainability and to reduce poverty in Kenya. The centre is actively engaged in the Poverty and Environment Initiative (PEI), an initiative set up by the collaborative efforts of UNEP and UNDP. It is designed to establish the poverty and environmental linkages in a bid to alleviate poverty by mainstreaming these issues into the national development planning processes. Vision 2030 is a long-term strategy for sustained economic and social development in the country. It is anchored on three pillars; Economic, Social and Political. EfD is working towards ensuring that environmental issues are given centre stage in the implementation processes.
