EEPFE Center Director Shares Ethiopia's Experience on Green Economy Strategies in Sudan

EEPFE Center Director and Senior Research Fellow, Dr. Alemu Mekonnen, participated on the UNDP Platform for Development Round Table on “Potentials for Green Investment in Sudan” to share Ethiopia's experience and lessons learned in formulating Green Economy Strategies.

"In
the context of developing countries the idea of green economy needs to be
considered taking sustainable development and poverty reduction into account." states Dr. Alemu. "While there are synergies between economic growth and environmental
sustainability, there are also tradeoffs which should be dealt with and developed
countries need to support developing countries in the efforts of achieving sustainable development especially in the case of global environmental
problems such as climate change."

According to Dr. Alemu, Sudan has the potential to develop a green economy strategy
and implement it. But this will require political
commitment at the highest level, putting the necessary policies and strategies
in place and implementing them properly.

The round-table discussion was organized in Collaboration with the
Ministry of International Cooperation (MIC) on 16th July, 2012 at
Corinthia Hotel, Sudan.
