The use of plastic as a household fuel among the urban poor in the Global South

Increasing plastic waste pollution has led to a rising prevalence of the open burning of plastic waste, especially in locations lacking formal waste management systems. Urban slum communities face particularly acute challenges in accessing both organized waste-collection services and low-cost traditional energy sources, and clean cooking-fuel alternatives tend to be unaffordable for their low-income residents. Here we examine the potential risk these unseen communities face and describe the need for a new research agenda to better understand and quantify the scope of the problem.

AbstractThis study examined the effects of public infrastructural development and industrialization on economic complexity in Africa, and how industrialization is moderating the effect of public infrastructural development on economic complexity. The study adopted the pooled ordinary least squares, the dynamic system generalized method of moments and the dynamic bias‐corrected least squares dummy variable estimators with a panel of 34 African economies over the period 2010–2021.

It is likely these risks will increasingly interact as projections of more erratic weather make small-scale farming more difficult and demand for rural land grows.

Abstract: Utilities across the global require stable revenue streams to provide customers access to high quality energy, water, sanitation, and other essential services. This requires policy makers to set prices to cover costs, promote the efficient use of resources, and ensure services are affordable. It also requires that customers pay their bills. Historically, utilities have used disconnections, or the threat of disconnection, to compel customers to pay their bills on time.

Disparity in housing affordability: evidence from a developing city

This study addresses critical gaps in the existing literature by investigating housing affordability in developing countries and integrating quality considerations into standard affordability measures. Using survey data from a random sample of 670 households in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, we conducted a distributional analysis to examine disparity in housing affordability and regression analysis to investigate factors influencing housing affordability. Our results reveal significant disparities in housing expenditure within HCMC households.

The interplay of climate change, upstream hydropower development, and local water engineering interventions for agricultural production contributes substantially to the transformation of waterscapes and water scarcity in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta. This paper aims to examine how these dynamics are linked to the paradigm shift in water management in An Giang and Ben Tre, the two ecologically distinct provinces that face serious water scarcity in the delta.
