Exploring the Potential and Challenges of Voluntary Carbon Markets in the Global South

The study identifies current energy markets and associated (actors) stakeholders in Africa. It will then recommend institutional structures that could reconcile the VCM with Articles 4 (binding commitment between countries to pursue emission reduction activities) and 6 (countries can pursue voluntary cooperation in the implementation of their Nationally Determined Contributions) of the Paris Agreement. Thirdly, it will identify potential impacts – on socioeconomic factors, vulnerable communities, and groups, that should be monitored and evaluated. We will be studying the above for a selected set of countries.

This will be a 30-month project panned across the EfD network, and some external experts.
