Exploring women’s empowerment in livestock: A qualitative study in Caquetá, Colombia.

Submitted by Manuela Fonseca on
EfD Authors:

This report presents the results of applying the qualitative protocols of the Women’s Empowerment in Agriculture Index (WEAI) in La Montañita, Caquetá, Colombia, with women’s associative groups in livestock farming. The research explores how participatory approaches can integrate women’s empowerment and promote gender equality in developing climate-resilient, low-emission food systems. It specifically examines the role of women’s organizations in the livestock sector and the structural barriers to their collective empowerment.

Relatives, neighbors, or friends: Information exchanges among irrigators on new on-farm water management tools

Submitted by Petra Hansson on

Highlights

  • Friendship and field proximity are key determinants to information flow on new on-farm water management tools in Ethiopia.
  • Knowledge on field size and seed variety are key indicators of productive friendships in irrigation schemes.
  • Friendship and field proximity facilitate information flow on irrigation duration even among farmers without the tools.

Shrimp farming industry in Vietnam: An aquaculture performance indicators approach

Submitted by Luat Do on

This study evaluates the Vietnamese shrimp farming industry through a Triple Bottom Line (TBL) perspective, using the Aquaculture Performance Indicators (API) to assess social, economic, and environmental performance. Over the past 25 years, Vietnamese shrimp farming has grown rapidly and diversified into four systems: Extensive, Semi-intensive, Intensive, and Super-intensive, and data is collected for all these systems.

How contracted tree farmers engage in and benefit from inclusive value chains: Evidence from Vietnam

Submitted by Luat Do on
EfD Authors:

In contrast to agricultural crops, long-term tree contract farming (CF) for high-quality timber production under sustainable forest practices contributes to social and economic development, as well as environmental conservation. However, there is limited understanding and insufficient literature on the motivations and benefits of tree growers participating in timber and its associated value chains. This study aims to address these gaps by examining the factors influencing tree grower participation in the tree CF model in Vietnam.

Sensitivity of rainfed okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L. Moench) to mulch material and plant spacing in drought-prone tropical soils

Submitted by Agha Inya on
EfD Authors:

Mulch regulates soil hydrothermal regime while suppressing weed growth, effects of which may depend on mulch material and/or similar to that of closed crop canopy. Combined use of organic or inorganic material as surface mulch and appropriate plant spacing may produce synergistic agronomic effects in water-stressed environments. This study evaluated the sensitivity of rainfed okra to mulch-spacing variants in droughty derived-savannah soils.
