EfD Ghana hosted a research and training seminar on Natural Capital Accounting (NCA) to deepen the understanding of the approach among researchers and PhD students. The session featured Kwame Fredua, Principal Programs Officer for Environmental Assessments and Audit at Ghana’s Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), and provided insights into the evolution of NCA in Ghana, the country’s institutional arrangements, and the importance of partnerships in strengthening NCA practice and communication. He presented alongside EfD Ghana researcher Kwami Adanu.
“NCA helps Ghana appreciate the true value of its natural assets and supports the country’s broader environmental sustainability goals,” said Kwami Adanu. “Collaborating with the EPA ensures that our research directly informs policy and strengthens national efforts to manage these resources responsibly.”
Working with researchers ensures work is grounded in evidence
In his presentation, Natural Capital Accounting in Ghana, Kwame Fredua outlined the main NCA accounts developed by the EPA, such as land and ecosystem extent, ecosystem services, and wealth accounts, and demonstrated how these accounts are used to support research, planning, and environmental reporting.
“The EPA welcomes collaborations with like-minded organizations to sustain Ghana’s natural environment,” said Kwame Fredua. “Working with research institutions like EfD Ghana ensures that our work is grounded in evidence and strengthened by emerging research,” he added.
Kwami Adanu’s presentation on Research Issues in Natural Capital Accounting highlighted methodological considerations, data gaps and emerging research questions that can strengthen NCA practice in Ghana. His contributions underscored the need for collaboration between researchers and practitioners to improve data quality and analytical approaches.
“The seminar was incredibly beneficial and will help us in advancing our mandate of equipping young people to lead responsible environmental action,” said Patience Ahiabor, Founder and CEO of EcoClub 360, an organization that empowers students and youth in Ghana to engage in responsible environmental projects and promote positive behaviors toward the environment.
The seminar, held on 18 November at ISSER, University of Ghana, brought together PhD students, researchers, NGO sector representatives, and EfD members. It provided participants with a practical understanding of NCA methods and applications in Ghana and is expected to strengthen future collaboration between EfD Ghana and the EPA.
