About INCLUDING-Africa
Innovative Climate Finance for Unlocking Development and Equity in Africa (INCLUDING-Africa) is a four-country research and policy initiative funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada. The project seeks to strengthen climate finance systems and promote inclusive, low-carbon and climate-resilient development across Nigeria, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, and Senegal.
As climate change continues to intensify flooding, droughts, heatwaves, food insecurity and environmental degradation, many African countries face a significant financing gap in implementing their climate commitments. INCLUDE-Africa addresses this challenge by generating evidence and practical solutions to improve fiscal, financial and policy frameworks, mobilize public and private climate finance, and expand equitable access to climate investments for women, youth, MSMEs, local governments and other underserved groups.
The project combines rigorous economic modelling, political economy analysis, participatory action research and stakeholder engagement to identify innovative financing mechanisms that can accelerate climate action while fostering sustainable economic transformation. It also works to strengthen the capacity of financial institutions, policymakers and local actors to design, deliver and manage inclusive climate finance.
Led by the Resource and Environmental Policy Research Centre (REPRC), Environment for Development (EfD) Nigeria, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, the consortium brings together leading academic institutions, development finance organizations, environmental agencies and policy partners from Africa and Europe. Through research, policy dialogue, capacity building and knowledge sharing, INCLUDE-Africa aims to shape evidence-based climate finance policies that drive inclusive growth and sustainable development across West Africa.
