Developing a Common Social-Ecological Systems Framework

Start date

The analysis of sustainability in joint social-ecological systems would be aided by the application of a consistent social-ecological framework. Without this, comparisons across systems can be difficult to impossible, and theory development can stagnate. This project contributes to an effort to develop such a common framework, or meta-theoretical language, which can be used by scholars in a consistent fashion to facilitate such comparisons and subsequent generalization and theory-building. Much of the development of this framework is taking place via the analysis of particular systems as a way to test the framework and draw lessons for its further development.

Theme 4: Governance, policies and sustainable management.
