Michael Ndwiga, Center Director of EfD Kenya and a lecturer in the Department of Economics and Development Studies at the University of Nairobi, was on February 26th, awarded by the University of Nairobi , the best overall innovator, recognizing his groundbreaking contribution to Kenya’s agricultural sector through the development of PeekGrow Foliar Fertilizer.
“This recognition is deeply encouraging. It reflects the power of research when it is translated into practical solutions that directly improve farmers’ livelihoods and promote sustainable agriculture,” he said.
His innovation, PeekGrow Foliar Fertilizer, is a 100% organic, locally developed agricultural input designed to improve crop productivity, reduce production costs, and promote environmental sustainability.
Lowering input costs for farmers
PeekGrow Foliar Fertilizer was developed through rigorous scientific research, formulation testing, and extensive field trials. The product integrates high levels of Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (NPK), essential micronutrients, and an in-built sticker and spreader in a single formulation.
“This unique combination eliminates the need for farmers to purchase additional sticker and spreader products, significantly lowering input costs,” said Michael Ndwiga.
Farmers embrace the innovation
Since its commercialization in July 2025, PeekGrow has demonstrated impressive market uptake. Over 3,000 liters have been sold, with distribution through 86 stockists and agrovet outlets across central Kenya.
“Beyond improving crop productivity, the innovation is also creating employment, with eight permanent staff and 16 sales officers currently engaged in operations.”
Farmers using PeekGrow report improved crop yields, enhanced plant health, reduced input costs, and ease of application. The fertilizer is currently used in horticulture, floriculture, coffee production, and fruit farming.
The University of Nairobi promotes innovators
“The University of Nairobi has supported this innovation through trademarking and patenting of the PeekGrow formulation, demonstrating the institution’s commitment to translating research into real-world impact.”
The product has also received all necessary regulatory approvals, including certification from the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), further reinforcing its credibility and market readiness.
Peekgrow plans to expand distribution across Kenya and into East African markets by 2028.
