Urhie, Ese

Dr. Ese Urhie is a pragmatic economist and academic whose contributions to development studies and economic research have left an indelible mark in Nigeria and beyond. With a career spanning over two decades, Dr. Urhie served as a faculty member at Covenant University from 2003 to 2024, where his expertise in economic growth, development policy, and environmental economics shapes the minds of future leaders. He currently lectures at Crawford University, Nigeria.

A seasoned scholar, Dr. Urhie holds a PhD in Economics from Covenant University, Ota, Nigeria. He also holds both MSc and MBA degrees from the University of Benin. His academic foundation, complemented by extensive research, positions him as a thought leader in tackling Africa’s socio-economic challenges. His research focuses on critical issues such as food security, climate change, health economics, human capital, and institutional development, reflecting his dedication to addressing complex global and regional concerns.

Dr. Urhie’s scholarly output is vast, with numerous peer-reviewed journal articles, conference presentations, and book chapters to his credit. His work on the interplay between economic growth, environmental factors, and human health is particularly notable, as evidenced by publications such as his analysis of air pollution and economic outcomes in Nigeria. Dr. Urhie’s ability to blend empirical research with practical policy insights has earned him recognition as a reliable contributor to academic discourse and development initiatives.

Beyond academia, Dr. Urhie has provided leadership in various capacities, including serving as a reviewer for reputable journals like African Development Review, Sage, and Cogent Social Sciences. His commitment to advancing the discipline of economics is further reflected in his membership in professional organisations such as the Nigerian Economic Society and the International Society for Development and Sustainability.

Dr. Urhie teaches both undergraduate and postgraduate courses, covering a wide range of topics which include health economics, public sector economics, development economics and advanced research methods. His teaching methodology fosters critical thinking, preparing students to tackle real-world challenges with innovative solutions.

Research Interest

Dr Urhie’s research interest includes a range of sustainable development goals and governance issues with a focus on human capital development, food security, economic transformation, infrastructure development and financial inclusion

Mentoring (PhD students and masters)

Dr Urhie has supervised and graduated 3 Ph.D and 8 MSc students. He is currently supervising 2 Ph.D  and 3 MSc students. He also mentors, trains and guides graduate students not directly assigned to him.
