Water and Sanitation Access, Pricing and Quality Research Consultant - IDB

Background of this search:

Established in 1959, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) is today the main source of multilateral financing for economic, social, and institutional development in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). It provides loans, grants, guarantees, policy advice and technical assistance, and produces and disseminates knowledge products, to the public and private sectors of its borrowing member countries.

The objective of this consultancy is to contribute to quality knowledge production through support in activities related to data gathering, analysis and research paper writing.

The team:

The Water and Sanitation Division (INE/WSA) within the Bank is committed to expanding access to quality services for low-income and vulnerable populations, promoting comprehensive and sustainable solutions, improving sector governance and financial sustainability, and incorporating the concept of water security in the sector, particularly by increasing wastewater treatment coverage, protecting supply watersheds, and reducing flooding risk.

In light of these commitments the Water and Sanitation Division is dedicated to knowledge production, management and dissemination that serves to assess needs and priorities, inform practices, advise clients and contribute to an evidence-based approach to lending.  

What you’ll do:

The selected candidate will perform the following activities:

  • Contribute to the design and administration of field studies for original data collection;
  • Prepare research papers, reports, and presentations;
  • Identify, compile, clean, and organize databases;
  • Prepare technical notes related to the Water and Sanitation Observatory;
  • Perform econometric and statistical analysis;
  • Prepare literature reviews;
  • Participate in academic discussions on research findings;
  • Assist with miscellaneous administrative duties related to knowledge organization, production, and management.

What you’ll need:

  • Citizenship: You are a citizen of one of our 48-member countries. We may offer assistance with relocation and visa applications for you and your eligible dependents.
  • Consanguinity: You have no family members (up to fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB Group.
  • Education: Undergraduate degree in economics, political science, statistics, hydrology, water engineering or related field. Master’s degree in economics, environmental economics, natural resources economics, applied economics, econometrics/statistics, public policy, or related field. Candidates should have a strong quantitative background (e.g., econometrics, programming).
  • Experience: At least five years of experience (or a PhD) and demonstrated knowledge and interest in at least one of the following areas: Strong programming skills in R and Stata. Strong writing and oral communication skills (proof of experience in academic writing is required) Familiarity with water and sanitation policy in LAC is highly desired. Experience applying microeconometric techniques to perform policy or program evaluation
  • Languages: Fluency in English and/or Spanish. Fluency in another language of the bank is a plus.

Motivation to do research, ability to work independently, and willingness to participate in research teams. Strong analytical abilities as demonstrated by academic achievements and other personal accomplishments. Excellent writing skills in English and in one other Bank language
