EfD builds researchers’ capacity in writing successful grant proposals

EfD South Africa researcher Professor Yonas Alem ran a grant writing workshop which showed participants the core parts of successful and competitive project and program proposals. This online training workshop, which took place on the 4th of December, is part of the capacity-building initiatives for the Global South by EfD, led by Yonas Alem. Co-hosted with EfD Director Gunnar Köhlin, the workshop was split into two sections.

The first section, led by Yonas Alem, honed in on individual research grant writing, from finding the correct funding opportunities, to the specific format of the proposals and what makes a successful grant proposal. The second section was led by Gunnar Köhlin and highlighted the value of program-level funding, such as EPRU funding, and the value of international collaboration in research and grant proposals.

More training workshop opportunities in 2026

With over a hundred participants, this workshop was the first step in highlighting the importance of grant writing, with a more in-depth workshop planned for 2026. As the Director of Capacity Building at EfD, Yonas has run a plethora of training workshops throughout the year and will be running more in 2026 to aid in capacity building in the Global South.
