The Centre of Excellence for Africa Climate-Sensitive Macroeconomic Modelling at the Makerere University School of Economics, in collaboration with the Environment for Development (EfD-Mak) Centre at Makerere University and Uganda's Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development is pleased to invite applications from EfD Family in Africa to the Inaugural Symposium on Climate-Sensitive Macroeconomics, scheduled to take place from 12–13 February 2026 at Makerere University.

The symposium will bring together members of the Coalition of Finance Ministers for Climate Action, policymakers, researchers, academics, practitioners, civil society organisations, and development partners. Discussions will focus on the current state of climate-sensitive macroeconomic modelling and natural capital accounting, with particular emphasis on progress in integrating these approaches into national planning, budgeting, and decision-making processes.

Makerere University is leading efforts to strengthen the capacity of African universities, think tanks, and ministries of finance in climate modelling and natural capital accounting. This initiative seeks to promote sustainable, climate-resilient development and to support the work of the Co-Chairs of the Coalition of Finance Ministers for Climate Action.

The symposium will also serve as a platform for knowledge exchange, showcasing ongoing initiatives in climate change modelling, natural capital accounting, policy innovation, and capacity building. The programme will feature plenary presentations, poster sessions, and parallel discussions, with detailed information to be shared in due course.

Organised under the theme “Climate-Sensitive Macroeconomics: Rethinking Growth in Africa’s Natural Resource Base,” the event will include keynote addresses, expert panel discussions, and country case studies highlighting innovative approaches and best practices in climate finance and the expansion of fiscal space. In addition, exhibitions will showcase nature-based solutions and successful innovations in addressing climate change.
