BACKGROUND: The Department of Agricultural Economics, Extension, and Rural Development is embarking on a strategic plan to lead the transformation of African agricultural and food systems through leading influential research and preparing our graduates to play a role in shaping Africa’s economic, social, and development pathways as we transition from the Sustainable Development Goals to the next development era post-2030. The Department seeks a Lecturer in Agribusiness to join our dynamic team in this endeavor and build a solid research programme that addresses critical contemporary issues in environmental science in Africa. RESPONSIBILITIES: The incumbent will be responsible for: 

    Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate modules in the agribusiness programme;
    Supervising fourth-year, Honours and Masters students in fields relevant to agricultural and development banking, agribusiness management, agricultural commodity trading, agricultural asset management and investments, farm planning, financial management, risk management and value-chain analysis;
    Conducting research and publishing articles in leading accredited journals in the above fields;
    Raising funds to support existing research programmes and/or initiate new ones in the above fields;
    Academic administration.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: 

    A MCom degree or MSc degree in Agricultural Economics with eligible admission to a PhD programme in Agricultural Economics / Agribusiness Management or registered for a PhD in Agricultural Economics / Agribusiness Management;
    Agricultural Commodity Trading Certification;
    Experience in agricultural commodity trading or in a banking environment;
    At least two (2) years’ teaching and/or research experience in fields relevant to the analysis of data related to agricultural and development banking, agribusiness management, agricultural commodity trading, agricultural asset management and investments, farm planning, financial management, risk management and value-chain analysis.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES): 

    Experience in using spreadsheets for farm planning, budgeting and supply chain functions;
    Able to demonstrate innovation in teaching, experience in blended learning delivery and the use of technology for improving learner throughput;
    Able to demonstrate innovation and present new ideas on how to expand the research capacity of partner institutions in Africa in the relevant field;
    Research or practical experience in fields relevant to agricultural and development banking, agribusiness management, agricultural commodity trading, agricultural asset management and investments, farm planning, financial management, risk management and value-chain analysis in Africa;
    Established linkages with the agricultural or agribusiness sector;     Experience in a banking environment.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
