Capacity Building on the Development of a Socially and Gender-Inclusive Payment for Ecosystem Services Guidelines in Kenya’s Water Sector

Intro

This project seeks to capacity build the policymakers and EFD Kenya researchers to develop and implement a socially and gender-inclusive policy guidelines for payment for ecosystem services (PES) in the water sector using insights from Costa Rica. The specific objectives of the project are: a) to learn and share experiences on the development of Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) policy guidelines that cover different levels such as (forest, farm, riparian ecosystem, and biodiversity conservation); b) to appraise how gender has been mainstreamed in the development of Payment for water Ecosystem Service policies; and, c) to develop a gender-inclusive Payment for Water Ecosystem Services (PES) policy guidelines for Kenya. In collaboration with academia from EfD-Kenya and CATIE in Costa Rica, the project will involve policymakers from Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company, National Environmental Management Authority, National Treasury and Planning, and Kenya Athi Water Works Development Agency who will lead in the identification of challenges affecting water ecosystems and the services they provide that are under increasing pressure, undertake a gap and gender analysis of the water ecosystem services actions and policy interventions, learn and share experiences on actions and policy interventions that have worked in Costa Rica and Kenya on Water Ecosystems Services, and develop a socially and gender-inclusive PES policy guidelines for the water sector. The expected outcome of the project will be Payment for water ecosystem service draft policy guidelines for Kenya, enhanced capacity building among partners including public policy and academia on socially and gender-inclusive PES.
