Highlights sources of income

Mauricio Oyarzo from NENRE EfD-Chile won the Best Paper Award by a young regional scientist with his work Shocks derived from mining windfalls and horizontal transfers: Exploring the permanent income hypothesis in Chilean municipalities from a spatial competition approach. (The paper is still in evalutation for publishing). The winner was announced at the 27th PRSCO online conference in Kyoto, which took place on August 1-4, 2022.

“This paper highlights the impact of sources of income from mining patents and the municipal common fund on the budgetary decisions of the municipalities: floating debt and municipal expenses. In the research I’ve found that both of them encourage short term decisions regarding expenses,” Mauricio Oyarzo explained.

Competitors should be under the age of 35 (on December 31, 2022) and from a PRSCO-relevant part of the world.

“This award is a recognition of the of quality research in this area from Chile. Is really important to my career because it is at an international level, so we can see that in this country we do excellent regional science,” Mauricio Oyarzo said.

Enhances and facilitates research information

The PRSCO is one of the 4 supra-regional associations of RSAI (Regional Science Association International) which was founded in 1954. The PRSCO enhances and facilitates exchange of research information in the field of regional science among members of Membership Sections of the PRSCO, as well as the exchange of this information in the Pacific Rim area between such members and other persons with an interest in regional science.
