Government fisheries officials benefit from joint training by EfD-Mak and EfD Ghana

Seventeen fisheries officers from Uganda’s districts of Kampala, Mukono, Masaka, Wakiso, and Jinja have benefitted from training on the bio-economics of fisheries management, organized by EfD-Mak and facilitated by EfD Ghana’s Director, Professor Wisdom Akpalu.

The two-day training covered pertinent topics including the cost, revenue, and profit in fisheries economics, growth functions in fisheries, property rights, resource extraction, and policy instruments to regulate overfishing. Other aspects were dynamic equilibrium and the concept of shadow value, destructive fishing practices, resource use externalities, and the performance of capture fisheries in Africa.

Collaboration means win-win

In a message to EfD Ghana on his return to the country, Wisdom Akpalu described the joint training effort as fruitful for both EfD-Mak and Ghana center, adding that it provided a space for knowledge exchange and learning, helping him gather fresh perspectives that would help improve research and related activities at EfD Ghana.

“There are clear win-win advantages in collaborating with other EfD centers. I look forward to more of such collaborations and the involvement of all colleagues at EfD Ghana for a common good,” said Wisdom Akpalu, referencing a similar collaboration in 2020 between EfD Nigeria and EfD Ghana to train graduate students, research fellows, and other officials in the bio-economics of fisheries management.

“Addresses the basis of our survival”

Associate Professor Eria Hisali, the Principal of the College of Business and Management Sciences, Makerere University, who officially opened the training thanked Wisdom Akpalu for making time to come to Uganda and Makerere University in particular to share knowledge, skills, and experiences from Ghana.

“I want you to look at this training as a very important one because it speaks of the very basis of our survival as a country and continent,” said Eria Hisali to the participants as he commended EfD-Mak for the intervention.

Other key speakers at the opening session included Professor Edward Bbaale, Director of the EfD-Mak center, who also thanked Wisdom Akpalu for facilitating the training.

The training was held from 15th-16th March 2023 at EfD-Mak center, Makerere University.
