ENRRI seminar on Ghana’s fisheries sector makes the news

Reporting on ENRRI’s seminar on the topic Capture Fisheries Management in Ghana: Challenges and Prospects – that took place on 18, August 2020 at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Accra – top news outlets in Ghana have published multiple articles reinforcing and extending key messages from the presentation and ensuing discussions at the seminar.

For example, The Daily Graphic and the Ghanaian Times (respected newspapers with nationwide coverage) published prominent print and online articles on how the number of canoes ought to be reduced from 12000 to 9000 to regulate overfishing of targeted fish stocks. In its publication, Ghana Today (Government of Ghana news portal) called attention to a number of measures to fight stock depletion. The measures include replacement of fishing nets with illegal mesh sizes, halting light fishing, discontinuation of premix subsidy and reallocating the money to providing alternative employment opportunities for the fishers, ending transshipment of juvenile and small pelagic fish caught by industrial trawlers at sea (i.e., saiko fishing), and limiting the number of fishing vessels.

The Ghana News Agency, on the other hand, published two online articles highlighting that annual consumption of fish per Ghanaian was decreasing, as well as the important role of political will in addressing overfishing.  Reports by the national news agency were re-published by nearly ten digital news sources.
