EfD Ghana builds the communication capacity of young researchers

EfD Ghana organized workshops on proposal and academic writing, and science communication aimed at strengthening the communication capacity of researchers. The workshops drew tens of budding researchers from the University of Ghana and elsewhere, and a swirl of positive testimonies from participants.

The proposal and academic writing workshop were held on December 15th. It was facilitated by EfD Director, Professor Wisdom Akpalu who tackled the session on proposal writing, and Professor Augustin Fosu of ISSER (Institute of Statistical Social and Economic Research) talked about academic and journal writing.

Dr. Fred Dzanku, EfD Senior Research Fellow and Senior Faculty member of ISSER, supported both sessions by sharing practical tips and experiences on how participants can improve, in today’s competitive research landscape, their success rate in proposal writing and in publishing journal articles.

Held on 17th December, the workshop on science communication focused on equipping participants with the skills and processes for writing and publishing blogs as a way of disseminating research. It was a practical and engaging session training session, facilitated by Godfred Akoto Boafo, Commissioning Editor for The Conversation Africa, an independent source of news and views from the academic and research community, delivered directly to the public.

To ensure a thorough training that translates into practice, part two of the Science Communication Workshop is scheduled for January 2022, to be delivered by another member of the team of editors of The Conversation Africa.

Wisdom Akpalu joined both workshops, interacting with participants, and talked about the EfD Initiative. He highlighted, among other features, the initiative’s commitment to building capacity for research and research dissemination.

The workshops attracted various levels of participants, including young academics, Ph.D. candidates, and students alongside MPhil- and Masters-level students as well as recent graduates with an interest to work in the field of research. It provided a conducive platform for experienced researchers to engage, teach and inspire young researchers while increasing awareness of the EfD initiative.
