The eighth edition of the Wallace Scientific Conference will take place from May 30 to June 2, 2023, reuniting researchers, experts, and decision-makers that will discuss and analyze the transformation of food systems in the face of environmental degradation and climate change.

This international scientific conference will be held at the host institution of EfD Central America, the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center (CATIE), located in Turrialba, Costa Rica, becoming an open high-level scenario to allow researchers to network, increase their knowledge, and share their findings.

"This conference is a multidisciplinary forum for top scientists interested in solving major global problems, such as food insecurity and unsustainable agriculture", said Róger Madrigal, EfD Central America Director and one of the Wallace Conference scientific committee members.

Key thematic areas

Six thematic topics will be addressed during the conference, for which participants can submit their abstracts:

  • The impacts of land and water degradation, climate change, and vulnerability on food systems.
  • Strategies and innovation pathways for climate adaptation and mitigation actions, promoting synergies and addressing tradeoffs to reach sustainability across regions.
  • Finance, investments, and agribusiness to promote adoption and scaling.
  • Sustainable food production and consumption patterns: required behavioral change.
  • Uplifting women, youth, and local (indigenous) populations for equitable access to nutritious food.
  • Governance for transformative change in food systems.

Leida Mercado, EfD Central America senior researcher and leader of the scientific committee, says that they are particularly interested in discussing and analyzing solutions aimed at transforming food systems to be better adapted to the changing climate, more diversified, sustainably intensified, and profitable.

"The conference will highlight the importance of promoting sustainable consumption and production. This requires economic incentives for producing more with less and for decoupling economic growth from environmental degradation," says Róger Madrigal.

Submission of abstracts

Professionals interested in sharing their knowledge related to the six thematic topics of the conference can apply following the guidelines indicated in this link: https://wallace.catie.ac.cr/TitlePaper.png

The deadline for abstracts is Friday, March 10. If the abstracts are accepted, notification messages will be received by the proponents.

The abstracts should contain a single paragraph without subtitles, indention, or references, with a maximum of 300 words, presented in an MS Word document format (.doc or docx). It should include the problem, the objectives, the methods used, and the main results and conclusions of the study. The suggested font is Times New Roman 11-point and single spacing.
