Parks and Wildlife

Costa Rica and South Africa share a common policy of creating national protected areas (NPA) as a way to achieve on-site conservation of key landscapes, ecosystems, and/or species. The Central American and the South African EfD centers are working closely with local authorities to tackle the main difficulties in achieving a sustainable system of NPA.

south africa | Parks & Wildlife The valuation of biodiversity conservation by the South African Khomani San "bushmen" community The restitution of parkland to the Khomani San “bushmen” and Mier “agricultural” communities in May 2002 marked a significant shift in conservation in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and environs in South Africa. Biodiversity conservation will benefit from this land restitution only if the Khomani San, who interact with nature more than do other groups, are good environmental stewards. kenya | Forestry Parks & Wildlife EfD contribution to Nature article EfD Associate Paul Guthiga, Kenya, is one of the authors of an article that will be published in 13 September 2012 issue of Nature. The paper is titled “Averting biodiversity collapse in tropical forest protected areas”. It is a collaborative publication with many authors. Guthiga´s contribution arose from previous work on Kakamega forest in Kenya.
