Agricultural Economist for SIMLESA Project

Menale Kassie currently works as a Research Scientist at CIMMYT. He completed his first degree and MSc in agricultural economics from the Haramaya University in Ethiopia. He obtained his PhD in Development Economics from the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. His research interests focus on development and natural resources economics. Methodologically he has good knowledge of applied econometrics (parametric and non-parametric techniques) and mathematical programming. He is applying both techniques on multiple plot observations and on true panel data. The applications of these techniques have been focusing on evaluation of land rental market impact on land productivity and input use; and sustainable land management technology impact on productivity and production risk in Ethiopia. The mathematical programming technique was applied to assess impact of reduced tillage on carbon sequestration and how multi-purpose fodder technology affects land use, land management, and household welfare. Currently, his research is focusing on:

1) The performance of land management technology (e.g. organic fertilizer and soil and water conservation technlogies) in different agro-ecology settings of the four regions of Ethiopia, and
2) Production risk, risk aversion, and crop failure impact on land management technology adoption in the four regions of Ethiopia
3) Land management technology adoption impact on production risk, risk aversion, and crop failure in the four regions of Ethiopia

Expertise/Research area:

Research on land management technology impact on productivity, risk, efficiency, and household welfare
Impact of production risk, crop failure and risk aversion on technology adoption
Program/intervention evaluation using propensity score matching methods
Panel and cross-sectional data analysis
Applied micro-econometrics
