Climate Change and Agricultural Productivity in Ethiopia: Vulnerability, Impact, Adaptation Options and Beyond

Recent scientific research has concluded that the increased atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases will have significant impacts on the Earth’s climate in the coming decades. Agriculture is one of the most vulnerable sectors to the anticipated climate change.

The predicted changes in temperatures and rainfall patterns, as well as their associated impacts on water availability, pests, disease, and extreme weather events are all likely to affect substantially the potential of agricultural production. The fact that Ethiopia is an agrarian country and mainly depends on rainfed agriculture makes it far more vulnerable to climate variability and change. Rigorous studies of climate change in sub-Saharan Africa in general and in Ethiopia in particular are limited. We identify the following gaps. Firstly, most of the studies on climate change, at least in the context of Ethiopia, have emphasized crop agriculture disregarding the role of livestock and their inter-linkages with crop production which are important. Secondly, studies on adaptation do not compare and contrast the diversity of adaptation options practiced by farmers. Thirdly, most of the studies do not focus on agro-ecology based analyses which might provide additional insights. Fourthly, none of the Ethiopian studies have tried to link climate change to economic growth and poverty. The main objective of this study is to investigate the potential impacts of climate change on agricultural (crop + livestock) production and poverty reduction using dynamic Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model and Ricardian approach. The specific objectives of this research are to:

1)      analyze climate change and agricultural productivity including livestock production

2)      assess the diversity of adaptation strategies practiced by farmers from point of view of returns and sustainability

3)      Link climate change to economic growth and poverty reduction.
