- 2009-04-16 UN Expert Group Meeting: Sustainable agriculture in Africa For the poor of the world, improved agricultural productivity and reduced land degradation is vital. The United Nations, the World Bank, and other bodies are currently making tremendous investments in African agriculture. How researchers can contribute to ensuring that these resources are put to best use was the main question for the expert group meeting, organised by the United Nations, together with environmental economists from the School of Economics, Business and Law, University of Gothenburg. The 27 participants included researchers, agricultural consultants, ministers and aid donors.

- 2009-03-24 EfD members attended the WB conference "Land Governance in Support of the MDGs" EfD members from six countries participated in the conference "Land Governance in Support of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs): Responding to new challenges", held in Washington DC, March 9-10, 2009. Presentations were held by Jintao Xu, EfD in China, Tekie Alemu, EfD in Ethiopia, and Stein Holden, EfD Associate. John Mduma represented EfD Tanzania. Wilfred Nyangena represented EfD in Kenya, and Gunnar Köhlin, EfD Director, participated as chair and discussant.

Researchers at Environment for Development Tanzania (EfDT), an initiative based at the Department of Economics at the University of Dar es Salaam, have identified a number of critical areas that will help both to protect Tanzania’s forests and the livelihoods of those villagers living close to the forests.
