Fifth Chilean EfD Workshop on Environmental and Natural Resource Economics and Fourth Short Course to Policy Makers

Research Nucleus in Environmental and Natural Resource Economics at the University of Concepción is organizing the Fifth Workshop on Environmental and Natural Resource Economics,  5th and 6th October 2017, and the Fourth Short course to policy makers on “Compliance and Enforcement of Environmental Policy and Management of Natural Resources”, 4th October 2017. It will take place at Termas de Catillo, Maule Region in Chile.

Land and forest tenure reforms workshop in Ethiopia, February 21-22, 2011

Land reforms have played a central role in the political economy of many countries in the world and have been subject to massive disagreements between different political interest groups and ideologies. EfD funded project aims to draw lessons from land reforms in several African and Asian countries. The findings will be presented in a book edited by Professors Stein Holden and Keijiro Otsuko, entitled Land Tenure Reforms: Impacts on Poverty and Natural Resource Management. What Can We Learn?

EfD Colombia raises awareness on air pollution problems and the need for action to improve air quality in Medellin

During March 2017, the metropolitan area of the Aburra Valley, where Medellin (Colombia) is located, experienced critical air quality episodes that exceeded the air quality standard of PM2.5 for several days. The problem caught the attention of policy makers and academicians. EfD Colombia through its Research Group on Environmental, Natural Resource and Applied Economics Studies (REES) organized a seminar (April 3d) and a meeting (April 4th) with the environmental authorities to discuss the implementation of the warning system and the effectiveness of the transport policies to address the bad air quality events. These activities were organized by Clara Villegas, Sergio Orrego and Santiago Arango affiliated to Universidad Nacional – Medellin, members of REES.

"Time poverty" alleviation received with singing and dancing in Kenya

The EfD research project: Short- and long-term effects of exogenously reducing water collection times on school attendance, hours studying and time use: Meru County, Kenya; involves an experiment to reduce water collection time in a rural area in Kenya. This reduction is an important form of "time poverty" alleviation.

The Department of economics, University of Dar es Salaam in collaboration with the East African Social Science Translation (EASST) at CEGA-UC Berkeley and Strategic Impact Evaluation Fund (SIEF ) at the World Bank organized  the 2016 East Africa Impact Evaluation Workshop and Evidence Summit that was hosted  at the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania from July 12-14, 2016  .

EfD Tanzania policy interaction & dissemination workshop

On January 29th , 2016 the EfDT secretariat organized the policy interaction and dissemination workshop that was held at Hazina square, Ministry of Finance, in Dodoma, a capital city of Tanzania which is about 460 km from Dar es Salaam. The workshop was organized to present four research papers and one report falling within Environmental Economics and poverty.

The importance of accounting for spillover effects in policy design

Marcela Jaime recently defended her thesis: Essays on behavioral Economics and Policy Design. What it is about? My thesis is about unintended effects of behavioral and policy interventions and its effects on policy design. Unintended effects of policies, either positive or negative, are often referred to as spillover effects. Specifically, my thesis investigates spillover effects of monetary and non-monetary policy instruments for environment and natural resource management, in both developing and developed settings.

Greener Industry If Environmental Authorities Change Strategy

Fewer industrial firms would violate environmental legislation and a higher number would adopt cleaner technologies if environmental authorities would focus their monitoring efforts on companies with the most environmentally damaging technology. At a societal level, such a strategy would mean less pollution at the same or a lower cost of monitoring, according to a new doctoral thesis from the University of Gothenburg’s School of Business, Economics and Law.

Fourth Workshop on Environmental and Natural Resource Economics and Third Short Course to Policy Makers organized by Chilean EfD Center

The EfD Chilean Center, Research Nucleus in Environmental and Natural Resource Economics at the University of Concepción, organized for the fourth time, a discussion workshop on the design of public policies on the use of natural and environmental resources. The objective of the workshop was to develop a scientific discussion to think about the state of the art in Natural Resource Economics and the Environment in Chile and contribute to maintain a long-run collaborative relationship with Policy Makers working in the areas of fisheries management, air pollution control and climate change.
