Guthiga chose Kenya over Europe

When Dr Paul Guthiga completed his thesis, he chose to return home to Kenya and join the EfD despite having been offered a post doc position at the Centre for Development Research, University of Bonn, Germany, where he studied.

The main reason for his choice was that the focal areas of the Environment for Development initiative research matched his interests, and now he is an EfD theme leader for the theme "Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD) and Land Use Change".

"Overall, as much as possible, I think that highly trained people should be supported and encouraged to work in their home countries where their marginal contribution to their society is much higher compared to working in developed countries", says Guthiga.
