Ad Hoc Expert Group Meeting on the Fourth Issue of the Sustainable Development Report on Africa (SDRA)

The meeting is organized by UNECA in collaboration with United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), from 14 to 16 December 2011.

The objective of the meeting is to enable experts to deliberate on and enrich the draft Fourth Issue of the Sustainable Development Report on Africa (SDRA IV), as well as the strategy for the review and updating of the SDRA-IV indicator set.

ECA launched the production of the SDRA as one of its flagship publications during the 2004-2005 biennium. This recurrent publication is intended to be an important medium for monitoring and assessing sustainable development in Africa, and is among other things, aimed at promoting a balanced integration of the three pillars of sustainable development. The SDRA aims to occupy a unique and important niche in promoting the development and implementation of sustainable development policies, plans and programs in the region.

Three issues of the SDRA have so far been produced in collaboration with sister UN agencies and other partners. The first was produced under the theme “Managing Land-Based Resources for Sustainable Development”. The theme of the second issue was “Five-Year Review of the implementation of the World Summit on Sustainable Development Outcomes in Africa (WSSD+5)”, and the third, “Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) for Sustainable Growth and Poverty Reduction.”

The fourth issue of the SDRA (SDRA IV) is being produced under the theme “Managing Africa’s natural resource base for sustainable growth and development”. The objective of SDRA IV is to provide a holistic assessment of the status of sustainable development in the region using indicators that cover the social, economic, environmental, and governance/institutional dimensions of sustainable development. The SDRA-IV will also provide a critical analysis, and show case the contribution of forests, biodiversity, biotechnology, tourism and mountains to sustainable growth and development in the region.
