EfD Central America will assist SINAC

EfD Central America will assist the National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC). The assistance contains training, coordination and tools for constructing a clear, standardized and operational methodology to set entrance fees or a variety of other service tariffs within protected nature areas in Costa Rica.

The methodology includes tools proposed by Alpizar and Madrigal (2005) who previously constructed a methodology for setting entrance fees in protected nature reserves. In addition to their proposal, we use a contingent valuation method to calculate entrance fees and a system of cost-based pricing for other services provided in the protected area.

Researchers Francisco Alpízar, Roger Madrigal and María A. Naranjo of EfD Central America, will coordinate the training and supervision of the implementation of the proposed methodology in ten different conservation areas during 2009. With previous experience in applying this method in Braulio Carrillo National Park - Sector Barva (PNBCSB) and Chirripó National Park (PNC) during 2007, we are looking forward to a successful implementation in other protected nature areas.
